Bowie State University, established in 1865, is Maryland’s oldest historically Black university and one of the ten oldest in the United States. It originated as the Baltimore Normal School for Colored Teachers. The Baltimore Association for the Moral and Educational Improvement of Colored People founded the school to provide educational opportunities for newly emancipated citizens. In 1910, the school moved to Bowie, Maryland, where it expanded its course offerings and facilities.

Bowie State University offers a wide range of accredited educational programs. The University has expansive degree programs including undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and specialty certificates.
